Prof. Yuval Nir awarded ERC “Proof-of-Concept” grant

Congratulations

28 January 2024

Prof. Yuval Nir from the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine, and affiliated with the Sagol School of Neuroscience and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, has been awarded the ERC “Proof-of-Concept” grant to facilitate exploration of the commercial and social innovation potential of his ongoing research of brain activity during sleep.

The project "InterictalSleepDetect" focuses on a novel approach for non-invasive identification of interictal activity during sleep – abnormal electrical brain activity that occurs in epilepsy patients between seizures, and in many other neuropsychiatric disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, autism, and after traumatic brain injury. Identifying interictal activity can improve the diagnosis of several diseases and help evaluate the efficacy of drug treatments. He serves as the scientific director of the Sieratzki-Sagol Centre for Sleep Medicine at the Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center.

Prof. Nir completed his PhD at the Weizmann Institute of Science and his postdoctoral training at the Center for Sleep and Consciousness, University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has won several awards, including the Sieratzki Prize for Advances in Neuroscience and the Adelis Neuroscience Prize.
